Why it is Important to Apply Sunscreen on Your Feet

June 8 2021

The hot summer months are here. Although majority of people apply sunscreen all over their body, still a good number disregard the skin on feet. We are so concerned about our faces and upper body that we often overlook the feet.

Sunburn is a real occurrence on the lower extremity. However, without proper protection, the legs and feet are not just at risk of sunburn but the continuous exposure to ultraviolet radiation along with factors such as genetics can lead to melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.

Sunscreen can help protect your skin against premature aging and skin cancer. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. It should be water-resistant and should protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen around 15 minutes before heading outdoors to give your skin time to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. Apply enough sunscreen and rub it thoroughly over the skin. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or immediately after swimming. Protect your skin with sunscreen every time your head outdoors, even on cloudy days.

Podiatrists recommend that you inspect your feet for any abnormal or new spots, freckles, or moles whether you have experienced sunburn or not. Skin cancer of the feet is more common than you think and it can be fatal is not treated early.

To keep your feet safe this summer:

  • Apply sunscreen from head to toe when at the pool or the beach to protect your skin from harmful UV rays
  • Check your feet and toes for any unusual mole or freckles. Look for any changes in size and shape in existing moles. Inspect your soles as well as under your toenails
  • Schedule regular exams with your foot and ankle surgeon to keep track of any suspicious marks.
